Doris Gove leads hikes for Road Scholar, Smoky Mountains Wildflower Pilgrimage, Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, and other groups. She is a biologist and has written three hiking guides and several books for children on natural history. She has taught biology, managed two nature centers, volunteered as a maintainer on the Appalachian Trail and other trails, loves hiking, and can’t resist turning over logs to see who lives underneath. She lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, with her husband Jeff Mellor and a grandson Andrew.

Once again we’ll celebrate the holiday weekends of summer family style with old-fashioned BBQ’s on the lawn. Please join us for a Summertime feast of house-smoked pork, grilled burgers, ribs, and all the fixin’s you can imagine. The Bluegrass Partners will be on hand to entertain us with some foot stompin’ bluegrass music and humorous anecdotes on the front porch during and after supper. These events will be held on the Saturday evening of the holiday weekends, but our dining room will be open for the usual sumptuous meals that guests have grown to love for the rest of the weekend. We look forward to spending these holiday weekends with you!

The “Asheville Gentlemen” a 7 piece Swing Band will be performing. They will be joined by the Kennesaw State University Swing Dance Association on Sat. night. Join in the fun by taking part in beginners swing dance instruction both Fri. and Sat. prior to the Asheville Gentlemen. Friday’s schedulewill be from 7:00pm to 9:00pm with instuction and cd’s.

Come to the mountains and join outdoor educator Wanda DeWaard. She will show you around our amazing forest trails at night! Learn to be more comfortable in the forest after dark by using your senses to move safely and with awareness. These walks will begin in the evening just before dark and will discuss bioluminescence and the natural history of synchronous fireflies as the hikes lead to an area suitable for viewing these amazing creatures!
Wanda DeWaard is an outdoor educator who has shared Earth Kinship and environmental awareness with people of all ages and a wide variety of backgrounds in community groups, schools, colleges, camps, environmental centers and teacher conferences since 1974. She holds a Masters degree in Recreation and Environmental Education and has directed youth and family programs all over the United States as well as in Canada and Germany. Currently, Wanda works as an outdoor program consultant and freelance outdoor educator in the Great Smoky Mountains area. Anything and everything in the natural world brings out her enthusiasm and contagious sense of fun.

27th Annual Demonstration Day – A Celebration of Traditional Ways of The Snowbird Cherokees.
Step back in time at a celebration of traditional ways of the Snowbird Cherokee Indians.
Sacred mound ceremony, handmade crafts, traditional Cherokee foods, demonstrations, exhibits,
traditional dancing, storytelling, singing, and children’s games.
The Sacred Mound Ceremony will begin at 11am. Everyone who would like to participate in the
ceremony should bring at least one cup or one turtle shell full of dirt.
Inspired by a lifetime of water sports enjoyment, Chris Tilghman has brought the first stand up paddle company to the North Georgia Mountains. Chris has over twenty-five years experience surfing some of the world’s best waves, including Kauai’s North Shore where he lived for five years. He brings his expertise to Snowbird for four days on the water with guests who would like to spend warm summer days learning this fun new sport. Paddleboards are now available for use to guests on Lake Santeetlah, along with canoes and kayaks.

Long time Snowbird guests M.C. and Jim Jerkins share the joy of making pottery with instruction as to how to form your clay piece, decorate it and glaze it in this summertime class. If you’d like, M.C. and Jim will take your work back to their studio and fire it in the kiln and then ship it to you. No experience is necessary, just come and have some fun with the clay!

Her workshops are fun-filled, information-packed, lively adventures into creating your own artwork. All levels welcome from true beginners to the most experienced painters. Nan Cunningham is an Auburn University graduate and a faculty member of Arrowmont School and Armory Learning Center. She is a teacher/painter in high demand for her workshops and expressive presentations. Her personal presence and uncanny ability to translate emotion through light, color, form and story give voice and feeling to her paintings and teaching. This will not be a workshop to miss!
