🦋 Heres a sneak p

🦋 Here's a sneak peek — and a reason to pay close attention this spring.

We commissioned Dayna Walton of Solstice Handmade to design this year's 2026 Flame Azalea Festival poster. Dayna is a printmaker, illustrator, and muralist whose work often features the underdogs of nature — the lichens, the fungi, and insects most of us walk past without a glance. Dayna first fell for these Southern Appalachian mountains during her Artist-in-Residence with Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2019, and she's been hiking, sketching, and studying our ecology ever since.

✒️ This year, her pen has been fluttering over her paper drawing butterflies.

Have you noticed an unusual amount of butterfly activity this spring? In March, WWF–Mexico and Mexico's National Commission of Protected Natural Areas reported a 64% rebound in the monarch population overwintering in Mexico — one of the most encouraging updates in years. The NC State Extension has also been tracking their spring return north through our state.

But it isn't only monarchs — our Appalachian Tiger Swallowtails also seem to be having a banner year. This species is only found only in the Southern Appalachians and is drawn to native azaleas as a key nectar source. The flame azaleas are blooming now in our lower elevations and will continue to creep up the mountains coloring the top of Hooper Bald in mid June.

Dayna's poster design celebrates that exact moment — when a bloom and its pollinators meet on a grassy bald in June.

The full poster design reveal and a limited edition of signed prints are coming soon — follow along for more behind the scenes content!

This spring our mountains are fluttering — butterflies are returning to North Carolina in greater numbers than they have in years.

🌺 Native azaleas are a favorite nectar source for the Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail. Up on Hooper Bald, the flame azaleas are preparing to do what they’ve always done — open right on time for the pollinators that need them.

This is the world Dayna Walton of @solsticehandmade has been drawing into our 2026 Flame Azalea Festival poster.

Dayna’s work is a field guide of the easily missed — lichens, stoneflies, slime molds. Dayna understand that is an ecosystems dependence on the underdogs that help make a place a place. For this year’s poster, her pen has detailed the winged travelers that arrive with the blooms.

Enjoy this sneak peak? Follow along! The full design, and a limited edition of signed screen prints drop soon.

Up N’ Adam Adventures here again and nearing the e Up N’ Adam Adventures here again and nearing the end of our Graham County exploration week. We need more time….

🌑 “Dark Sky” was on of the intriguing features for us during this week and it hasn’t disappointed…. Really the only thing we have missed is sleep getting up at 3:30 each morning to check out the Milky Way.

📍Maple Springs overlook did not disappoint, the Cherohala Skyway provided several photo opportunities and even 129 offered many places with a window to the sky.

🚙 We did the Three Dam Loop!! We used Graham County Travel and Tourism’s handy “Scenic Driving Loops” map — pick one up at the Welcome Center when you head through town.

Santeetlah, Cheoah, and Fontana Dams make up the “loop” with many points of interest along the way including Yellow Creek Falls, Historic Tapoco Lodge, Tail of the Dragon & Deals Gap just to name a few.

WOW WOW WOW

Wildflowers in abundance , more butterflies than we have seen in one area and the BIGGEST poplar trees we have ever seen!!

Parking was easy and plentiful, amenities were exceptional ….. what an amazing experience. Highly recommend!!

The only thing we are finding lacking on this adventure is time for sleep 🤦🏼‍♂️ ….. but with incredible sunrise opportunities, hiking trails galore, wonderful sunset spots, and dark sky stargazing, who has time for sleep anyway? 😁😂

We are pleased to announce that Dayna Walton of So We are pleased to announce that Dayna Walton of Solstice Handmade has been selected as the 2026 Flame Azalea Festival poster artist.

Dayna’s work is rooted in careful observation and a deep respect for the landscape. She approaches place through study –whether it is the ever shifting color racing along the ridgeline or the architecture of tiniest of wildflowers. Her work does not simply depict nature; it displays time spent in its woods and fields.

During her Great Smoky Mountains National Park residency, Dayna immersed herself in field study – hiking, sketching, documenting botanical forms, and translating those observations into a thoughtful body of work. That experience strengthened her commitment as an artist to honor the character of a place rather than imposing her point of view upon it.

The flame azaleas of Hooper Bald are not just a group among a number of native azaleas across Western North Carolina; they are residents of a specific elevation, soil, climate, and seasonal rhythm unique to this particular location. Dayna’s sensitivity to ecosystems and attention to detail makes her especially suited to interpret this landscape in a way that feels authentic and enduring.

We look forward to watching Dayna’s design journey unfold and to the unveiling the 2026 poster – an artwork sure to be shaped by observation, rooted in place, and reflective of the rare stand of native flame azaleas on Hooper Bald that define the Flame Azalea Festival celebration.
